Following on from the first meeting of new Decommissioning Steering Group, planning is now underway for our next Decommissioning Special Interest Group event.
Working in partnership with EEEGR, Decom North Sea will bring the next in series of Special Interest Groups on Decommissioning in the Southern North Sea. The SIG will influence and shape the delivery and management of joint activity in developing the SNS decommissioning sector and drive supply chain engagement across the UK in co-ordination with other low carbon energy activities, e.g. oil & gas exploration & production and offshore renewables.
The market for offshore decommissioning offers considerable new opportunities. In the North Sea, more than 440 fields have been developed, or are in the process of being developed, and within these 440+ fields more than 800 production facilities – either fixed and floating platforms or subsea completions – are either in production or in development.
The majority of pre-1980 structures are now beyond their original service life of typically 25 years, and are strongly reliant on robust processes to manage risks and assure structural integrity.
High oil & gas prices have extended the life of these assets and delayed the abandonment and decommissioning of many fields, however, it is inevitable that a major decommissioning industry will evolve in the coming years.
