“The nuclear industry decommissioning model shows us that, with strong collaborative focus, decommissioning projects can effectively be re-packaged – by nature, location, risk profile or other criteria – to optimise economic and technical benefits.”

About Decom North Sea
Decom North Sea has been set up to tackle the main areas of weakness and the bottlenecks which are inhibiting UK decommissioning supply-chain capability.
The demand for a dedicated North Sea decommissioning forum to enhance knowledge transfer and facilitate collaborative activities was confirmed by a major industry consultation exercise undertaken by the Scottish Enterprise Energy Team during 2008 and early 2009. (Click here to view a pdf copy of this report).
In particular, the lack of solid decommissioning experience in the UK supply chain was viewed by many potential suppliers as a major barrier to market entry.
Jointly funded by industry and the UK government, Decom North Sea was set up in April 2009 as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, with a board of directors drawn from North Sea service companies, contractors, operators, decommissioning specialists and industry associations.
Aims and Objectives
Decommissioning North Sea oil and gas facilities is projected to cost between £24 - £30 bn between 2010 and 2030, and it is essential that as much of this investment is returned to the economy as possible. Decom North Sea will therefore:
- Promote a vision of the “win-win” potential to create and sustain jobs and prosperity for North Sea supply chain companies, as well as providing operators with reliable, safe and cost-effective solutions to decommissioning challenges.
- Work with the industry, Government organisations and other trade associations to formulate effective contracting strategies for the forthcoming decommissioning programme in the North Sea.
- Promote the concept of packaging, or grouping, of offshore assets into larger decommissioning programmes, thus helping to create a stronger case for investment by the supply chain, and more efficient use of major high cost equipment.
- Facilitate networking and constructive discussion between Members, Associates and other interested parties through an extensive programme of events.
- Provide collective representation of Members’ interests through meetings, briefings and responses to consultations.
- Research and circulate information about decommissioning business opportunities to assist our Members and Associates.
- Provide focused intelligence to Members through briefings, specialist working groups and newsletters.
- Promote the strengths, experience and technologies of the supply chain throughout the North Sea and globally.
